Omniva LT, which operates the largest network of parcel lockers in Lithuania, will invest more than €40 million in the construction of the most modern parcel sorting terminal in the Baltic States in the Kaunas Free Economic Zone (FEZ) and in the sorting technology to be installed there. This is the largest investment by Omniva LT in the entire period of its operation in the country and the largest investment ever by the Omniva Group operating in the Baltic States. The terminal will handle all of the company’s shipments arriving in Lithuania, as well as some of the international shipments arriving and departing from all three Baltic countries. It will become the central terminal in Lithuania.
“With a sound assessment of the future prospects for e-commerce and the logistics sector, which is inseparable from it, we see this record investment as being both necessary and timely. In particular, the new sorting line will help us streamline and optimise our business processes, thus further improving the quality of our services and extending their availability to a large number of our customers. In addition, the new terminal will become another step towards consolidating Omniva LT’s position as a priority logistics partner in the country, improving working conditions for employees, and preserving natural resources. Finally, the investment will have a significant impact on strengthening Lithuania’s position as a logistics hub for the entire Baltic region − we are closest to Western Europe, where most of the international parcels are sent to and from,” says Simonas Bielskis, CEO of Omniva LT.
The new Omniva LT parcel sorting terminal will be built in the Kaunas FEZ, on an area of 9 ha. The terminal building is expected to have a floor area of 21,000 m2 − equivalent to three football stadiums. Part of the investment will be used to provide modern office space for the relocation of around 70 administrative staff in Kaunas.
The central axis of the new terminal will be a parcel sorting line manufactured by Equinox Europe, in which Omniva LT is investing around €10 million. It is the most modern sorting line in today’s international market, capable of automatically sorting up to a third of a million parcels per day. The total capacity of the sorting terminal will be up to 15,000 sorted parcels per hour, and the new sorting line will ensure that parcels sorted at the company will be automatically distributed to more than 700 different destinations.
It is planned that the sorting line will distribute not only to customers in Lithuania, but also international Omniva shipments that reach the Baltic States from Western Europe, China, and other countries. The technologically advanced parcel sorting terminal will allow for maximum avoidance of human error and faster delivery of parcels.
“Today, we make up 28.3% of the parcel market in terms of the number of parcels delivered, and we are among the top three most favoured brands in the Baltics. While economic forecasts show potential signs of turbulence, to be as close to the customer as possible and to ensure the highest quality of service, our investment is timely, calculated, sound and, most importantly, focused on long-term plans and commitments to all stakeholders: customers, employees, partners, and the public. Having carefully assessed all possible scenarios for the development of the national and international economy, we see that the investments are necessary for further development of Omniva LT and e-commerce. In other words, the realised investment will meet not only the current, but also the future needs of the company, its employees, and customers,” says Vaidrius Verikas, CFO of Omniva LT.
Construction of the new terminal with an automated parcel sorting line is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2024. The construction is being planned after assessing the potential for further expansion, with the possibility of increasing the terminal’s area by up to 50% in the future.
Omniva LT operates the largest network of parcel lockers in Lithuania. It consists of 351 parcel lockers, with a total of more than 47,000 compartments. Omniva LT is owned by Estonia Post − AS Eesti Post − which operates the largest network of parcel lockers in the Baltic States.
